SOMETHING RATHER DIFFERENT No 2

I wonder how many of you remember this poem?  I didn't realise when I read it as a child how deep the meaning was.  Hope you don't find it too serious.

TO DAFFODILS by Robert Herrick

Fair Daffodils, we weep to see you haste away soon;
As yet the early rising sun has not attained his noon.
Stay, stay, until the hasting day has run but to the evensong;
And, having prayed together, we will go with you along.

We have short time to stay, as you, we have as short a spring;
As quick a growth to meet decay, as you, or anything.
We die, as your hours do, and dry away, like to the summer's rain;
Or as the pearls of morning's dew, ne'er to be found again.

  1. I am surprised it was taught to children. Deep indeed.

    1. I am not sure it was ever done as a 'set' poem but being in the Laurel and Gold book it was of course available to be read by children.
      I found it gave me real food for thought.

  3. I've never heard that one. The flowers are beautiful. I like the cheery daffodils, but can never have them in the house.

    1. Perhaps not a know poet either.
      I too love daffodils (after all they are yellow) but I too find the 'perfume' not to my liking.

    1. Seems this poem (and perhaps the poet?) has been neglected by many. Glad you enjoyed it Denise.
