As you know we now have underground power, not only to our house but also in the street. The ugly old power poles and wires are now gone and we have nice modern light posts. I was just checking out the difference it makes to our streetscape and thought I'd share it with you. This was taken last year before the work had begun when we were on our way home from Baldivis:
This was taken last Saturday on the way home from our #2 great-granddaughter's 6th birthday party in Baldivis:
It's truly unbelievable the difference between then and now. I know it is costing us but we feel much safer now and no more worries about fallen wires in stormy weather which did happen several years ago.
Incidentally, our house is way down on the right-hand side, second from the end, and no, that is not a cloud but it was late afternoon/early evening towards sunset. (or it may just be my bad photography!!).
That is QUITE the difference.....
ReplyDeleteI think the two photos show the difference so well.
DeleteYou are so right, looks fabulous xxx Rae
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't until I compared my two photos that I realised just how much difference it has made. Looking quite smart even for a little old suburb like Hammy Hill. xx

ReplyDelete...for some reason I thought about those newspaper cartoons "spot the difference"... you missed your chance to tease us fiendishly Mimsie!! But yeah, looks fab. YAM xx
You know YAM I didn't even think of that but maybe it would have been a tad easy eh? It does look great even though it is just an ordinary suburban street in an old suburb.
DeleteSuch an improvement. I wish they would do it here too. Our newer suburbs are pole free, but ours is not new.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes to the safety aspect too. A big yes.
The difference is quite unbelievable isn't it? Ours is a very old suburb but that hasn't stopped it happening. We rate payers had to vote for it and our area voted in favour even though there is a big individual cost involved. We as pensioners get it half price but still $2,500 over 5 years on our rates. Well worth it though.
DeleteAn amazing difference, and more restful on the eyes too. There's been discussion, well more of a statement actually, that underground power won't happen in our older suburbs and in the city centre here because it would mean too much disruption to established footpaths, businesses and gardens. It's my own firm opinion that such disruption would be well worth the inconvenience. Our newer suburbs are being built with underground power, thank goodness.
ReplyDeleteWhen you consider that parts of Hamilton Hill are much more than 60 years old (our street is 50+ years old) and yet they've been able to do this with very little disruption of any kind then I think those discussing it in your city are just looking for an excuse not to proceed with it. Where the cable was laid across our garden you couldn't even see whey they dug up the lawn as they were extremely careful. Not government workers but private enterprise which may have made a difference?
