THOUGHTS ON THURSDAY

After Saturday night's fiasco when I flooded the kitchen and ruined two-thirds of the cupboards, not to mention making the edge of the vinyl floor covering pucker up, I have had mostly black thoughts this week.

I am trying to find something that has gone 'right' for us but my mind is mainly blank right now.  It is good that the insurance assessor will call on Monday morning to view the extent of the damage but I am somewhat apprehensive as to how far they will go to remedy the problem.  Just have to wait and see, and hope for the best.

It was nice to have our permanent cleaning lady back today as she is so easy to get on with and does an excellent job in just one hour which never fails to amaze me.  Even when I was fit I doubt I could have vacuumed the living room, main bedroom, kitchen, hall and back verandah etc and also cleaned the bathroom and the 2 toilets and washed the kitchen, bathroom and laundry/toilet floors in one hour.

Oh yes, another 'right' thing happened.  Our street light, as mentioned, has been installed and it is working.  It is very tall and doesn't shine light through our bedroom windows at all.  I know we have sunblock blinds but there is also a tall eucalyptus between the light and the house which would also deflect any light.

My nephew, who is an electrician, told me last week that if a street light does shed too much light onto a house it is possible to ask Western Power to put a shield on the light to prevent that problem. We fortunately don't have to do that but it's worth knowing.

Hopefully, by next Thursday we will know exactly what they are prepared to do for us with regard to the kitchen and things on the home front will be looking a tad brighter.  I can sense poor old Phil is worried about it too but he doesn't say anything but I feel so bad to have caused the problem for him, for both of us in fact.

    1. I hope you are right. I guess it's just 'cos I'm at an age when you really can do without upheavals in your life.
I would love to share Jenny with everyone but so far we humans have not perfected the technique or transporting bodies through space. xx

  2. Well try to look at it this way...you are going to have a lovely new fixed up kitchen to enjoy...maybe it was just the fates deciding you needed to renovate lol.

    1. Fingers crossed that you are right Delores. I can tell by looking at the damage that it's going to be a very big job.
Actually I've never liked the colour of the bench tops. It is a nice formica (or whatever) but mottled very dark brown and although I'm not what you'd call 'house proud' I seem to have to wipe bits off it every time I am in the kitchen. Perhaps the fates heard me complaining once too often?

I do think that in our aging years, every little twist and turn becomes monumentous, so I am sure this is seeming bleaker than it truly is Mimsie. Buttons and Delores are both correct - it will "be right"!! And Heavens, that cleaner is worth her weight - definitely a right. Bug hugs. YAM xx

    1. I know you are so right Yam and I must find the silver lining that I know must be lurking there somewhere.
Yes, Jenny is such a great person and even our old home looks brighter for her having been here.
That street light is also good...great to have light again, better than it's been for years

  4. It's the waiting that's the killer Mimsie, the wondering of the Assessor's findings and the consequent amount of fixing they will agree to cover.
I'm sure you're covered for this in your policy Mimsie, so I agree it really will be ok in the end, but that doesn't help much to get through another couple of days.

    1. Thanks Rose. You and everyone are wonderful and I feel much more cheerful having read all these great comments.
Yes, it says in our policy flooding due to baths etc overflowing so a kitchen sink must be covered as well.
Oh well, all will be revealed when the assessor is here on Monday. Phil did say he sounded 'nice' on the phone so here's hoping.

  5. Your cleaner sounds amazing. Many years ago the smaller portion cleaned our bathrooms (for the first and last time) in under ten minutes. He was quite peeved at me when I told him he had done a half-arsed job. 'You haven't even looked'. Which was true. But cleaning our bathrooms properly would have taken most of the time that your cleaner did EVERYTHING in.
And stop beating up on yourself. Please. You didn't mean to do it - and a renovated kitchen awaits you.

    1. Oh EC I do have to laugh so often at your remarks regarding the SP. Unfortunately very few men really understand the true meaning of the word 'clean'. Usually a spit and polish is good enough but they often do mean well and think they are helping.
Once again to you, as with others, thank you so much for caring. I am sure it will 'all come out in the wash' or perhaps that is not a good choice of words in this instance.

  6. Wow I would love a cleaner, some days it's just hard work.
I hope you do better with the insurance co than me when my roof leaked in my kitchen I was told the roof didn't have enough pitch on it and it wasn't covered in our policy.

    1. Oh dear, I do hope you are now with a different insurance company. That decision of theirs sounds darned mean. Did it stipulate in the policy how much pitch your roof should have had I wonder.
This company we are with have been great in the past and particularly so when a silly old chap ran into the back of our car when stationary and tried to tell us there was no damage which actually amounted to over $1,000 'cos he'd pushed the back inwards. They handled it all very well on our behalf.
It is only since my arthritis has become so bad that I've had this cleaner through a subsidised scheme run by our local Council. She truly is fantastic.

  7. Don't be too worried Mimsie; it will all work out and soon we'll be seeing photos of a lovely new kitchen here.
I used to be a cleaner in factories, (between shoe factory and Coles jobs), I cleaned the offices, toilets and lunchrooms. Several of the bosses liked my work so much they asked if I did houses too. I said no, just my own.

  8. I will know the best or the worst on Monday morning and then I will either worry less and hopefully not more than I am now.
I loved your story about your cleaning days. Perhaps cleaning houses could be worse if you had really house proud owners who would criticise your work. At least when the factories are closed you can just get on with your job.
