IT'S ACTUALLY RAINING IN PERTH....RIGHT NOW

Yay!!!  After about 6 weeks with nary a drop it's raining.  Not heavy rain but quite constant gentle rain and I'm loving it and so will our garden.  With water restrictions (only allowed to use set sprinklers on two days a week) it is difficult to water sufficiently well with hand held hose.  Along with these showers the temperature has taken quite a dramatic plunge.  It was 24.4ºC in Swanbourne (on the coast just north of us) a short while ago and it is now down to 16.6ºC.  Would be similar where we are but a tad warmer.  This is quite a contrast to yesterday when it stayed warm till late afternoon (it is now 12.40pm here).  Knowing our weather, if the sun shines it will warm up during the afternoon.

Our friends in the eastern states have had more than their share of rain (and large hail) in recent weeks and we in the West always offer to share it with them but unfortunately with a distance of some 3,600 kilometres (about 2,400 miles) between us that is impossible.  While they are deploring the weather we sit and hope and today our hopes have been rewarded.  Rain....glorious rain....and a promise of more showers tomorrow (perhaps).

Another reason I am delighted is Phil will celebrate his 84th birthday on Monday and I've invited the family to join us for coffee/tea and cake on Sunday afternoon to wish him a happy birthday.  Ours is a small house with a not very large living room so I'd hoped to be able for us to sit out on the front lawn if it was cool enough to do so.  They are forecasting a temperature of 26ºC (78.8ªF) with a sea breeze all day so that should be perfect (or as H.E Bates' Pop Larkin would say "Perfick".)  Thank you so much Mr Weatherman (who in our world is known as "Hughie".  Don't ask me why that is....it just is).

  1. Happy Birthday Phil - how I hope that the day (weather and all) is indeed Perfick. And I loved the Larkin family - I must hunt them out and reread them.
No rain here. Twenty minutes drizzle this morning. We really, really need it.
It is cooler though - yesterday in the 30s, today low 20s...

    1. Thanks EC and will pass on your good wishes.
I decided to re-read the Larkin family books so have bought 3 of them on eBay (1 3 and 5) and now need to find 2 and 4 to complete the set. They are quite raunchy stories but so funny.
Hope you get your much needed rain. It's been great to have cooler weather this week and the rain too.

  2. How lovely that your garden is getting a good wash and watering just in time for the birthday party. Hughie must be watching and smiling.
    Happy Birthday Phil.
I don't remember reading any of the Larkin stories, I'll have to look them up.

    1. Thanks Elsie and will pass our greeting to the birthday boy.
The garden is certainly looking fresher cos of the rain and it's nice to have a few cooler days too.
Did you watch the TV series Darling Buds of May with David Jason? That was the family and there is a series of 5 books. Quite cheeky but also quite delightfully funny.

    2. I thought "Larkin" sounded familiar. I tried to watch the Darling Buds of May, but decided I'd probably like the books better, then never got around to finding them. I will now.

  3. Hi Mimsie, Hope the weather cooperates for the birthday celebration and we send our best wishes to Phil for a Happy Birthday.
Thanks for the visit to our blog and comment. Thanksgiving in the U.S. Is celebrated on the last Thursday in Nov, the date differs but day of the week remains the same. Our celebration was delayed until Sunday as Grenville/Pat is battling a nasty sinus infection and an invited friend has multiple health issues, so we wanted to wait until he is feeling better to enjoy our turkey dinner. We remain thankful to celebrate later.
The color is nearly gone from most trees here, although I did find some color on a walk around the neighborhood yesterday and will post those photos. Our rains are over for now and there is frost on the lawn.

    1. Hi there...thank you for the birthday wishes which will be duly passed on.
I didn't have a lot of time but will re-visit your blog as ofter as I can.
Sorry to hear about the sinus problem....that can be so painful so hope all is well again soon.
Trust you will have a wonderful turkey dinner on Sunday with your friends.
re autumn colours....on a holiday in New Zealand back in the 1980s it was autumn and the colours of the trees was so spectacular.

    1. Sorry I'd missed your comment. I've now passed on your best wishes to Phil. He does smile quite a lot and so far has managed to keep breathing (using his machine each night to help with his sleep apnoea). The small amount of rain was better than none I guess.

Yes that rain is a relief; it came in Sydney quelling the fires and bringing lots of lovely clean air. May your party be wonderful!! YAM xx

    1. We didn't have nearly as much rain as in the eastern states but even a little is well received. We do need more though but not very likely between now and Christmas.
I am hoping Sunday afternoon will turn out well. It's always nice to have our small family together. xx

  6. How clever are you to have a moving photo. So wish I knew how to do that. Loving the bit of rain we have had. xxx Rae

    1. I had to search on Google to find the moving picture. There are quite a few of that type of picture if you look for them. I'd not be able to do something like that with my scant computer knowledge.
The rain was good wasn't it but we could have done with quite a bit more. xxx
