IT'S BEEN A TAD WARM IN PERTH TODAY

So far this summer (since 1st December) we've had a few hot day but some reasonably cool ones as well, probably ranging from the high 20s to the mid-30s.  We were expecting a hot one today when they forecast 41ºC (105ºF) but I doubt anyone expected the mercury to reach 44.4ºC (about 112ºF).

Needless to say very little has been done in the Elvis household today.  Phil popped outside long enough to water the pot plants and I did do the dishes and prepare an egg salad for lunch.  The rest of the time has been spent stretched out in the living room with the ceiling fan going along with the airconditioning.  We are not tempting the aircon so it is set on 24ºC which is bearable for me but a tad cool for Phil.  We daren't set it any lower just in case it should give up the ghost.

We let Candy out for a short while this morning and then she spent the rest of the day (till 5pm) asleep on a chair in the living room.  That cat knows how to look after herself.   She asked to go outside a short while ago but was back inside within 10 minutes so back door soundly shut again now.

We do have one nasty fire up in the hills which I hope they will be able to bring under control before nightfall.   An earlier one is under control and I imagine people in the area are breathing a big sigh of relief.

After the current horrific fires in South Australia (26 homes and countless sheds destroyed with 29 people injured) , and to a lesser extent in Victoria, we can only keep our fingers crossed that we don't suffer the same problems in our metropolitan area. It is now approaching 6pm and the temp in the city is 34.8ºC although at Swanbourne on the coast it has gone down to 29.8ºC as there is a light sea breeze blowing.   Tonight the minimum temperature is forecast to be 24ºC (75ºF) so it's going to be a pretty warm night to be in bed.

P.S.  I have been industrious in that I've actually been sewing 36 crochet squares together to make another rug so don't feel I've entirely wasted the day.

  1. When it gets that warm, all I want to do is sleep. I hop the fires aren't bad this year. I feel bad when people lose their homes.

    1. Not being a person who can sleep in the daytime I don't have that choice unfortunately. I'd have been happy if there had been even one decent programme on the TV but these days it is such rubbish.
We have been lucky so far in Western Australia but the fires in South Australia have been devastating with so many homes lost and they've had problems in Victoria as well.

Phew...... crochet is my winter pursuit - in that sort of heat it wouldn't even occur to pick up the hook!!! Candy has the best idea of all &*> YAM xx

    1. I also found I couldn't crochet in summer Yam but then I decided to do small squares about 16 x 16 which I can then sew together. They look pretty and you can use up lots of left over yarn too.
I think cats are very wise in most situations and Candy certainly knew how to handle the heat. xx

  3. I simply can't imagine heat like that...the most I've seen it rise to here is around 34 celcius. Your kind of heat would be like being locked in a sauna. I do hope they get that fire under control.

    1. Fortunately in Perth out humidity is never very high when the temperature is way up there so not sauna-like at all. It is more inclined to feel that way when it is much cooler.
The latest count is 38 houses lost in the South Australian fires. We have so far been fortunate here in Western Australia although a fire caused by lightning in our hills is still being kept under control.
I guess we would have to say we are glad to be 1,500 miles away from Adelaide and 2,000 miles from the fire in Victoria.

  4. Here in NE Pennsylvania USA it is going down to 0F tonight with highs in the low teens. It is difficult to imagine that winter would be hot. I hope the fires are so extinguished, I saw them on the TV.

    1. Our winters are never hot but also never cold in Perth. Just warm and comfortable. Our summers, on the other hand, are HOT.
They are still fighting the fires over in South Australia but hoping some rain may help ease the situation somewhat but hot temps are forecast for the next two days.

  5. I saw that you had broken records and winced for you. We have been way too hot for me - and not even approached those levels.
Follow Candy's wise example and look after yourself.
PS: I am so glad that the temperatures weren't that high for your birthday.

    1. Hottest January day for 18 years is what I heard and records like that can remain unbroken as far as I am concerned.
Yes, I was so fortunate the weather man took pity on me for my birthday with a lovely coolish day of just 27C.
Cats I am sure often could teach us a thing or two.

  6. We're having similar heat here, although not in the 40s this week, we had that last week and will again next week. We have a bit of rain forecast for tomorrow and Thursday, I hope we get it and enough of it to put out those fires. Thankfully the wind is much less now.
Don't worry too much about wasting your days Mimsie, that's what summers are for, lying around dreaming of snow. I spend my days sitting by the computer reading blogs, reading books, eating too much ice cream. My airconditioner is set at 23 and on the other side of the room I have a fan going to blow some of the cool air into the bedroom. Our overnights have been 25, a tad uncomfortable, I usually wake at 2am and turn the bedroom fan on, then fall back to sleep.

    1. It seems you are now getting more rain than you want but at leat it has put paid to those dreadful fires.
I don't do much during any part of the year these days and with the aircon in my workroom out here the heat is bearable. Poor Phil has to put a jacket on cos he find the airconditioning too cool even when set at 24C. I think it must be something to do with him being from the UK.
We have a great overhead fan in the bedroom which goes quite slowly set on one and on warmer nights we use 2. We do get hot nights but lately they've been between 15 and 20.

  7. This time of year is always such a worry with our sunburnt country.
I saw a bit on the news tonight that said 2014 saw Australia with its hottest and longest spate of heatwaves since 1910.
the humidity here in Nth Qld is the killer. Talk about that old saying about "going troppo"!!
    Stay cool sweet lady.

    1. I do manage to stay cool thanks Rose but rarely venture outdoors when it's hot except into an airconditioned car to travel to an airconditioned building.
Our humidity has increased over the years but still nothing like in our eastern states. Perhaps the difference is the Pacific vs the Indian Ocean although that is said to be waming up too.

  8. 3 hours south from Perth and we felt the heat as our old air con gave up the ghost.

    1. That was bad timing just when we had such a horrible day. Thankfully it is a little cooler but a 37C is coming next week. Hope you can find some cooling real soon and thanks for popping in. Nice to meet you.
