A PHOTO A DAY....number FOUR

This was Coventry Cathedral in 1839.....showing its magnificence, just over 100 years before it was almost completely destroyed.    No more needs to be said.

No, I am not showing the cathedral because I am religious but as an example of the beauty that can be destroyed because of man's inhumanity to man, not to mention human sacrifice as well.  When I see such wilful destruction my thoughts always return to John Lennon's wonderful song "Imagine".  What a great world it would then be if all his words came true.

  1. There is much hopeful wisdom in Lennon's "Imagine". I must add the same for stonemason Jock Forbes, who lashed together the "Charred Cross" from the building's ruined beams. There is a great and encouraging strength in such songs and gestures.

Special songs and gestures are just that....special and they supply hope.

  3. Cathedrals are beautiful inside and out, especially Catholic ones, but I sometimes wonder if all that stunning "richness" is really necessary. Wouldn't parish money be better spent on supporting the poor in the parish? So much gets collected in the plates, (well it used to), yet the people who gave really often couldn't afford to. I'm reminded of movies where the churches are so rich and the homes surrounding are ramshackle and spilling over with to many children who don't have shoes. I'm sure God appreciates even a modest little church just as much or even a community of faith with no building at all.

    1. As you know River. I am not religious so I go along wholeheartedly with what you say about cathedrals, churches etc.
I am sure true believers could worship their God in the open air without all the palaver that so many religions have.
Every time I go outside I give thanks for what Mother Nature has given us and that is sufficient for me. I have simple needs.

  5. What a shame to think of so much beauty and hard work destroyed for virtually no reason at all.
