AND THEN SHE WENT AND STUFFED IT UP

I just knew (and said so) that I was tempting fate when so many things went 'right' last week!!!  Happy as Larry was I until Saturday night when I did something really terribly, awfully, ridiculously stupid.  I left the hot tap running into the kitchen sink and we had a FLOOD.  I can honestly say I've not done anything like this before which I guess is in my favour and we are covered by insurance as well but I've done so much damage to our kitchen sink cupboards.   This picture is not of our kitchen (although similar) but it rather looked like this when Phil walked into the kitchen after the tap had been running for some time:

Phil and I worked for some time with two mops without getting very far and then I decided to fetch towels from the linen cupboard and that certainly made the hard work a little easier.  Line full of freshly laundered towels just in thanks to Phil.  We both suffered yesterday, me with my back and poor Phil with his neck which had been poorly already.  He is OK today and I'm walking a tad better but it's still a painful reminder of what I've done to our poor kitchen.

We had the kitchen renovated back in about 1982 and although it's nothing flash it suited us.  Now the water has determined that some type of renovation is going to be needed again.  The water has warped the doors and also partly lifted the formica (or whatever that brown stuff is) up on one side of the bench top and the bottom of the cupboard is warped and doors won't close and the bottom drawer won't open at all but fortunately nothing very important in there except my dishcloths really.

Phil rang and reported this mishap to our insurance company and we are covered and an assessor will call sometime within the next week.   Our insurance company are extremely efficient so we are hoping it won't be too long before we know if we are going to be fully covered for the damage.  The lady on the phone even said they would check the floors in case of damage which I'd not thought of. Our floors are jarrah so should be OK but I guess it's worth making sure although I don't really want the vinyl pulled up. Guess we'll leave that decision to the assessor when he is here.  We are now in the hands of the insurance company.

The one good thing that has come out of this is how patient my husband is if ever I do anything silly. Not one cross word about it even though I feel I deserved at least one.  He said to me this morning "When I am perfect then I will criticise!"  What more can a woman ask for?  Can't think of anything.

  1. Oh dear. I am so sorry to hear that - and have done far more than my fair share of stupid things.
Stop beating yourself up - it achieves nothing. It was an accident, and will (hopefully) soon be fixed.
And I am confident that you wouldn't have been reproaching your husband if he had left the tap on. You are human. And a very nice one at that.

    1. Now that our insurance company has accepted it as a claim I am not feeling quite so bad but it is I am sure going to cause quite an upheaval in our otherwise quiet home. Never mind, worse things happen at sea, so I am told.
When Phil does silly things (like losing his keys, wallet etc) I don't go mad at him but try to help as much as I can so guess it is give and take all the way.
Your lovely compliment made me feel much better, thanks.

  2. Oh no! Your poor kitchen. Still, accidents happen and just think, you'll have some lovely new cupboards. I worry about that drawer that won't open now, all your dishcloths might be damp and going mouldy. I hope you aren't allergic to mould as I am. I also hope your floor is okay. I once flooded our laundry, way back when we had a twintub washing machine, I was filling the tub part and went to check on one of the kids....

    1. Won't know about new cupboards till we have the visit from the Assessor..fingers crossed though but they'd have to match the rest which could be difficult.
While I was still in shock after what I'd done Phil said we will take out the drawer above the bottom one which he did and I've rescued my dishcloths and a packet of those silver scratchy things I use when washing up. The drawer was not wet but it was the 'floor' of the cupboard underneath that had swollen up and jammed the bottom drawer.
I now realise how easy it is to do something like that so must be more careful in future. Is it an age thing? No I don't think so but just a lapse.

  4. A lousy thing to happen Mimsie, but as River said you'll have some lovely renovations after the assessor has been. May it all come to pass swiftly with no hitches for you.
Let us know how it progresses.

As troublesome as you feel this right now Mimsie I am inclined to think that there will be a silver lining and in a few weeks it will be getting noted once again as a 'right' in life!!

    1. Tsk! indeed but as said before worse things happen at sea. It is all on hold now while we await a visit from the assessor. It is going to be a huge job to repair all the damage so a big upheaval for us but as long as the outcome is good we will have to wear that. xxx

    1. I was watching pictures of the awful flood happening in England right now which makes my little kitchen disaster appear so minor. I am just hoping all will be fixed eventually.
Yes, he is one in a million although he often says it is more likely he was won in a raffle. : )

  9. Wow, your husband is one in a million. Not many men would be able to resist being nasty about an incident like this. I'm sorry it happened, and sorry you had to do all that clean-up afterwards, but on the plus side, I bet your kitchen will end up looking better than ever... and you'll love it.

    1. Thank you for your kind words Susan. See my comments re Phil in my reply to Delores.
What they decide to do to rectify the problem will be very interesting as only one third of the cupboards have been affected. Perhaps we may end up with a patchwork kitchen?

    1. We certainly do as we are only human. He worries about tiny things he can do nothing about but when something 'big' happens he takes it in his stride. I think a lot of nervous people are like that. I know I am. xx
