THOUGHTS ON THURSDAY

"I cried because I had no shoes until I saw a man that had no feet"

This week I have had this thought very much in my mind.  On Monday evening I lifted some things that were heavy and paid the price the next day when I could barely walk because of the pain in my back.  I was so thankful to have the smaller walking frame that I can negotiate around in corners in the house.  I don't exactly get around like this youngster, but at least I can still get around.

I was able to get an appointment with my physiotherapist yesterday afternoon and she worked so hard on all the painful spots for half an hour and I did obtain some relief.  At least I could almost stand upright although still having problems walking properly.  This morning the stiffness has set in again but I've just had a call from the physio's office telling me they can fit me in to see Jenny at noon today.

This is something I've lived with off and on for many years now and I always to try and remember how many people are worse off than I am.  That is why I used the above quote.  There is always someone somewhere MUCH worse off than I am.

Today therefore the 'right' thing in my life is that I do indeed still have two legs so can get around on, albeit very slowly, and can still see very well, hear not so well, smell the roses and do most of the things we take for granted every day.  I do have a lot to be thankful for and the most important 'right' at present is a wonderful man who listens to me grizzle, puts up with me and then helps in any way he can including getting our lunch and dinner the last two days.  Thank you Phil.  Without you I'd be sunk.

    1. Yes Rose that is true...for better or worse....I sometimes think poor Phil gets the worst of it but we do care for each other and I help him in other ways (reminding him to do his insulin injection and the like).

  2. Phil is such a treasure, you are both very lucky to have each other.
I manage my back pain with hot water bottles to ease the muscles, then lying down with my legs up on a stack of pillows so the thighs are at right angles to the body. I lie like that for one to three hours a day depending on how bad the pain has been. Most days my back is good enough that I don't need to do the lying down.

    1. If I told Phil he is a treasure he would only laugh but it is true. Like all of us he has his faults but they are very minor.
Most days my back is tolerable too but I definitely have done something to it as it's not been like this for some years and it's different to anything that has happened before. I've had arthritic problems for 60 odd years so guess it just has to get worse as time goes by. I may get my heat pack going thought as I'd forgotten about that. Thanks for the reminder.

    1. The older he gets, the more helpful he is. He is even beginning to tidy up when he prepares a meal. Previously he needed a kitchen helper (me). It is truly wonderful having someone you know you can rely on.

    1. I'm off to see Jenny tomorrow morning for a third visit. There is some improvement but I can still only stand for about 5 minutes before the ache really sets in again. I will see what my GP says when I see him on Tuesday for my B12 injection. Perhaps a CT scan to check for further damage. Time alone will tell. You of all people know what aches and pains are like. They do tend to come and go but when you get a persistent one like this, then one does worry more than usual.

  5. Thanks Susan. What would be do without the help of professionals. Phil does a good job with the Dencorub and a little muscle massage but you need the experts to really hit the spot.

  7. Thank you Rae...off to see my wonderful physio this morning. Back is improving, albeit very slowly. I too think Phil and I make a good pair. As you age you need to be really there for each other and I think we are. xx
