SOMETHING RATHER DIFFERENT No 4

This is a passage from William Shakespeare's "MacBeth" which Phil and I often quote (or parts thereof) when we hear some bumptious twit make some outlandish statement or the world appears to be going really mad.   We think it explains everything.  What do you think?

"Tomorrow, tomorrow, and tomorrow.
Creeps in this petty pace from day to day.
To the last syllable of recorded time;
And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death.   Out, out, brief candle!
Life's but a walking shadow; a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing."

      Right now the world does seem to be going mad. We two must therefore stay sane. xx

  2. Shakespeare wrote some truly amazing things. I wonder whether he realised that hundreds of years later they would speak loudly to us?

    1. He certainly did and he is still very much quoted as so many of his writing hold true to this day.

  3. I think it's a sad poem;
    "Life's but a walking shadow......And then is heard no more."
    I think life is so much more than a walking shadow and 99% of the time, I'm very glad to be alive, to enjoy this world as long as I'm able.

    1. I think you have to take the passage as a whole or that is how we read it. More or less how we arrive, live and then are gone. Our lives are lived upon a stage and what we make of them is up to us.
      I feel we all try to enjoy our lives while we are here on this earth but each individual is rather insignificant in the total scheme of things.

  4. Perspective. That's what this gives us.

    This and that thing seemed so important days ago, but it wasn't. So much of what we fear or dread will pass suddenly and disappear. We've, as a people, come this way before, precisely this way. And here we are, again. But again we will continue, prevail, make our way to the top of the mountain.
