SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT (2)

'SAD MEMORIES" Charles Stuart Calverley

They tell me I am beautiful they praise my silken hair,
My little feet that silently slip on from stair to stair;
They praise my pretty trustful face and innocent grey eye;
Fond hands caress me oftentimes, yet would that I might die!

Why was I born to be abhorred of man and bird and beast?
The bullfinch marks me stealing by, and straight his song hath ceased;
The shrewmouse eyes me shudderingly, then flees; and worse than that,
The house dog he flees after me - why was I born a cat?

(I don't really believe all cats feel that way, or at last I hope not).

  1. I definitely hope not. And don't believe it.
    A suicidal cat is beyond sad. Any healthy animal longing for death is dreadful.

    1. As I said above, I don't believe all, if any cats feel that way except perhaps those that have been dumped and have to try and make their way in an anti-cat world. Our old Soot had obviously been dumped and for a time I think he may well have agreed with this poem. Eventually, after much love etc he became confident enough to behave like a cat should behave.

  2. Such a beautiful cat. Most cats sit around (on all the best seats),thinking they are God and wondering when the minions will open another can of food for them.

    1. I couldn't believe how beautiful that cat was. Just had to steal his picture.
      I must admit Candy does ask for things but very politely and as I wanted a cat to sit on my lap I musn't complain when she chooses to do so for hours on end.
      I sometimes wonder how our little Precious survived for nearly 13 years as she was so frightened of everything. Maybe at times she would have wished not to be a cat. She was only happy when she was with us alone.

  3. Actually I think most of them are pretty arrogant and full of themselves lol.

    1. I think the more we love them the more arrogant they become and as we give in to them who can blame them. I do however feel for those that are mistreated and unwanted.

    I am certain they are not thinking this at all... rather; "Hey World, Have You Not Yet Realised You Are Here Only For My Pleasure or Disdain???"!!!

    Actually just recently, at a discourse, the speaker gave an analogy of how we can either be devoted to something, or become that something. His example was, 'a cat and a dog were homed by a couple and their two children. They got all the good things and the dog one day remarked to the cat "these people are so kind and so generous to us, they must surely be Gods." The cat said, "no, they are so kind and generous because the know I am God."'

    1. No matter what I was rather taken by this poem and am sure there are cats in this big wide world that would agree with the words
      Yes, I have heard a similar story to the one you told and many versions of it. It is, after all, the truth. xx
