HOW ONE PICTURE CAN INVOKE MEMORIES OF THE DISTANT PAST
I was looking for information on the internet recently and came across this beautiful photograph of our own Cottesloe beach. While looking at it I remembered when, as a young teenager, I used to come swimming here with my Mum.
She and Dad had bought a corner shop in Swanbourne (the next suburb to Cottesloe) and whether she and I caught a bus here or we walked (people used to walk quite long distances way back then) I can't remember but I do know we came down to Cottesloe beach several times for a swim.
On one occasion there was quite a bit of surf close in to the shore but Mum was always game so she kept on swimming only to be dumped by a quite ferocious large wave. When she came out she realised something was amiss with one foot and she subsquently discovered she had broken one of her toes.
I'm not sure if we came swimming again after that, perhaps not. It was just so lovely remembering those fun times that Mum and I had together.
P.S. If you click on the picture you can enlarge it. It is really quite magnificent. I just didn't want to spread it right across the page and blot out other bits and pieces.
NOTE: After I posted this I was checking out an article on Facebook which gave the names of 10 towns in the world where a woman would (supposedly) be safe on her own. One of the towns named happened to be Perth, Western Australia which praised the town and added "and while there you should visit King's Park and also "Scarborough beach". It's a great pity when people make these statements that they don't get their facts correct. The photo they used was the one above and this is definitely NOT Scraborough beach.
It looks beautiful. You'd best straighten out the writer of that article.
ReplyDeleteIt is lovely. I'd straighten out the writer but it was an offshoot of another article I found on Facebook so probably can't get back to it now. Will check it our later.
DeleteIt does indeed look beautiful. Images, sounds and scents can all carry us back to the past - faster than a Tardis.
ReplyDeleteVery beautiful. Happy memories of a long ago time. Kakka now has a Tardis as well as a Dalek. It is tiny but oh so cute.
DeleteWhat a great beach for a child to spend summer! With a little imagination that fabulous kiosk could be anything at all. an Arabian temple, a castle, a fairy house, anything really.
ReplyDeleteIt is a very popular beach. I've not been there for some years now but the pines are still there and that beautiful building.
DeleteIt is gorgeous and I enjoyed reading your post. Lovely memories!
ReplyDeleteThanks Denise, you are always welcome here. Precious memories are so important, especially as we age.
DeleteHi Mimsie! What a beautiful area. I agree with River, in her comment above. I thought that magnificent building looked like the Taj Mahal! Thanks for sharing your lovely memories and photo. And thank you for stopping and commenting on my blog. I'm so happy my post about my much-loved dog, made your heart sing! I couldn't want for a nicer compliment.
ReplyDeleteHi Becky...lovely to have you pay me a visit. I don't have many followers as I don't do anything interesting these days being mostly housebound.
DeleteUnfortunately when one is on the beach one doesn't see that building as it is seen here from a distance. You perhaps lose a little of the overall effect of it. It wasn't my photo by the way....I had to steal it from an article about our city.
Having been along that stretch Mimsie, I can attest to its incredible beauty. Very, very different to the east coast. The hue of the water and colour of the beaches and the beautifully designed and kept foreshore/esplanade is a real credit to the people and the powers that be.
ReplyDeleteIt quite literally took my breath away.
Hi Rose, nice to have you pay me a visit. As said above I don't have many followers and really appreciate anyone who pops in.
DeleteOur west coast is very beautiful but as I've not seen those in the east (except for Melbourne) I can't really compare them. I know West Aussies are very proud of their beaches.
Hi Mimsie, I've just found your blog.Cottesloe beach is beautiful. I used to live in Hamilton Hill and still live around freo. It was lovely to read about your childhood and your mum and I'd love to read more.
ReplyDeleteHi Tez...thanks for popping in and I hope you will again soon. I do live in Hamilton Hill (been here since 1974) and it's not a ad pace to live. We are almost on the southern border of Hilton.
DeleteI am glad you enjoyed this post.
I'm a fan of Cottesloe beach and the tea house, a great place to take visitors. I used to have to bring Brittany here once a week for volley Ball practice. Lovely post thanks Mimsie. xxx Rae
ReplyDeleteThanks Rae. It is a beautiful place. Do you remember a few months back when birds were all over the road under the pines 'cos they were shedding their nuts (the pines not the birds). Sorry that's rude but it wasn't meant to be. I couldn't put it any other way. xxx
