Nowadays anyone, anywhere can be in danger. Have you watched the Poldark series on TV I wonder? I loved it.Mimsiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00249766510078357225noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2704657209559170713.post-63038352982305830372016-07-28T20:35:10.832+08:002016-07-28T20:35:10.832+08:00Knowing nothing about the royals besides Elizabeth...Knowing nothing about the royals besides Elizabeth (I watched her coronation or wedding as a small child), I will be starting from scratch pretty much. It IS confusing about the battles and I was wondering if all the battles in Poldark were actual. I think now, they must have been. Turbulent times, not dissimilar to today. Scary, because now we have the technology to blow ourselves off the face of the planet.Sharonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02743921972328074980noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2704657209559170713.post-51761593132547330262016-07-28T17:58:26.080+08:002016-07-28T17:58:26.080+08:00Yes, I think so much was learned by rote which is ...Yes, I think so much was learned by rote which is fine for times tables but very boring when it comes to history.
I don't know if aborigines were mentioned when I was at school although of course they were included with tales of John Eyre and other explorers.
I now find history so important and geography too with world events as they are today.Mimsiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00249766510078357225noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2704657209559170713.post-64137486711958416132016-07-28T17:56:21.590+08:002016-07-28T17:56:21.590+08:00I was pre-social science so history and geography ...I was pre-social science so history and geography were separate subjects. I think we learned some Oz history, about explorers etc i.e. John Eyre but feel quite a lot was about the eastern states rather than about W.A.
I do feel you are right and boring teachers make for boring subjects. Perhaps if they showed a little more interest in the subjects they teach the pupils would enjoy learning more.Mimsiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00249766510078357225noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2704657209559170713.post-10336048542466326912016-07-28T17:53:54.135+08:002016-07-28T17:53:54.135+08:00I too am endeavouring to learn more about history ...I too am endeavouring to learn more about history and geography and often wish I had a more or less photographic memory such as Phil has that could remember so much of it. He quotes so many things as we talk some of which he may not have heard or read for many years. So envious of a memory like that.
I hope you will continue to enjoy stories of some of these rather strange kings or early times in Britain.Mimsiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00249766510078357225noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2704657209559170713.post-43462900322280564302016-07-28T17:51:15.464+08:002016-07-28T17:51:15.464+08:00I truly enjoy Poldark and they are repeating the s...I truly enjoy Poldark and they are repeating the series on TV again this week.
There were so many battles etc it is difficult to keep up with them but maybe, if you follow British royalty, some of them may be revealed. One can only hope they are all factual but I feel the research undertaken to write this book would be very thorough.Mimsiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00249766510078357225noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2704657209559170713.post-496114502858807862016-07-28T08:20:09.234+08:002016-07-28T08:20:09.234+08:00You'll have to excuse my ignorance. Until I be...You'll have to excuse my ignorance. Until I began watching and reading Poldark, I didn't know if Cornwall was a fictional or actual place. I know nothing about English history and can barely remember my American history. The P. books are filled with all kinds of history and some of it is very interesting - I find myself wondering how many of the people/battles/incidents mentioned are actually true. So - I believe I will look further into it after I finish the series. It is a lot to absorb and my 'sponge' has quit functioning properly. Dates, rulers and battles. Mostly English history, with a small amount of Australian history. And very, very little about our indigenous people (unless they were being massacred).
As I age, history has become a passion. I don't remember learning much Australian history, only that which pertained to the English arrival of fleet and convicts. The rest of the world didn't seem to matter, as long as we knew which king or queen reigned in any particular time frame, we were considered 'educated'. This was in primary school where history wasn't a separate subject, but was part of the "social studies" with the other part being geography which I barely paid attention to. High School history is something I don't remember at all, except for one term where we had a substitute teacher who was truly inspired in her teaching and clearly loved her subject. I was sorry to see her leave and the regular dull teacher return. History became a boring subject again.Riverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14794655013673748992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2704657209559170713.post-87129574318039204902016-07-28T05:26:07.726+08:002016-07-28T05:26:07.726+08:00Hari OM
...well we had to learn all this at school...Hari OM
...well we had to learn all this at school - and I promptly forgot it when no longer necessary to recite dates and events! Now, with age and life behind me, it is fun and I enjoyed reading this Mimsie! YAM xxYamini MacLeanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18383916589808462620noreply@blogger.com
